JOB TITLE: GAME LANDS MAINTENANCE WORKER 1

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Game Lands Maintenance Worker series describes work in the development, construction, and maintenance of wildlife habitat areas and related infrastructure for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
DEFINITION: This is entry level construction trades and equipment operation work on state game lands and on private lands under cooperative agreements.
An employee in this job performs a variety of tasks to assist in the development and maintenance of wildlife habitat areas and in the construction, repair, and maintenance of related facilities and infrastructure. Work assignments are developmental in nature to acquire skill and proficiency in several trades, which may include carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, masonry, and welding. Employees also receive instruction and on-the-job training on the safe operation of construction equipment and the safe use of a variety of hand and power tools. Work includes performing various agricultural, habitat improvement, and groundskeeping tasks that may require the application of pesticides. Although duties may be performed independently, work at this level is primarily focused on developing journey level skills in the construction trades and a practical understanding of the agency’s wildlife habitat program. Work is assigned by the supervisor or a lead worker and is reviewed in process and upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):
• Participates in the development, maintenance, and improvement of wildlife habitat by assisting in a variety of food and cover projects.
• Receives instruction and on-the-job training in a variety of construction trades, including the safe operation and maintenance of a wide range of tools and equipment.
• Receives instruction in the operation and maintenance of construction equipment.
• Operates a variety of construction and maintenance tools and equipment such as chainsaws, hand and power tools, mowers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, sprayers, snow blowers, tractors with attachments, pickup trucks, front loaders, and dump trucks.
• Participates in prescribed fire operations.
• Applies pesticides to control weeds and invasive species for habitat improvement, agricultural, and facility maintenance purposes.
• Assists at check station operations, handles animal specimens and carcasses, and performs animal tagging or marking.
• Participates on survey crews to develop, maintain, or reestablish boundary lines.
• Operates mobile electronic devices including global positioning system units and tablet computers.
• Operates a computer with standard office applications for communications, record keeping, mapping, and related purposes.
• Operates a motor vehicle.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of tools and methods used in the building and construction trades.
• Knowledge of groundskeeping and agricultural methods and techniques.
• Ability to interpret sketches and diagrams of work plans.
• Ability to operate motor vehicles.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):
• One year of laboring experience using construction tools and equipment;
or
• One year of farming experience using agricultural tools and equipment;
or
• One year of construction equipment operation experience;
or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
• All positions are required to obtain an active Class A Commercial Driver’s License within one year of employment in this job.
