GAME FARM SUPERINTENDENT
DEFINITION: This is management work which involves directing the activities of a Game Farm for the propagation, care and distribution of game birds in the Bureau of Wildlife Management within the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
An employee in this class administers a Game Farm which includes preparing the budget; purchasing supplies and materials; supervising personnel; raising and distributing a large number of game birds; and maintaining hatchery equipment, buildings, grounds and a fleet of vehicles. An employee in this class manages a 24 hour day, seven day a week operation. Work is performed with considerable independence in determining methods, procedures and supervision of the Game Farm operation in accordance with Game Commission rules, regulations, and procedures. Work is reviewed by the Chief of Propagation Game, Commission through periodic inspections, conferences, reports and objectives completed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Develops work plans, and performs work involving budgeting, personnel management, work scheduling, purchasing, equipment inventory control and maintenance to operate a State Game Farm.
Manages breeding, hatchery, brooding and rearing operations, including daily care of birds, egg handling and incubation, lighting schedules, specking, vaccination and transfer to holding field, holding field cover management, and holding field construction.
Implements disease prevention and control programs, including directing sanitation/isolation procedures, administering treatments, inventory medications and maintaining flock health records.
Manages the sale of pheasant chicks and eggs to the general public and organizations and collects revenue from sale.
Maintains production records, feed inventories and reports, including monthly operations' reports, stocking reports, day-old chick sale listings, annual reports and work progress reports.
Identifies safety problems and makes corrective actions.
Makes presentations to private and public groups and organizations.
Performs the full range of supervisory work.
May participate in the performance of their subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organization requirements.
Performs other related duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of game farm operations and techniques with special reference to pheasants and ability to apply knowledge to specialized game propagation operations.
Knowledge of the life habits and requirements of game birds.
Knowledge of common game bird diseases and methods for their treatment.
Knowledge of principles of budget and fiscal management, work planning, and record keeping.
Knowledge of public relations and establishment of public relations program.
Knowledge of the operation of equipment used in farm operations and game propagation, including farm tools, equipment and machinery, incubators, hatchery and brooders.
Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of a group of subordinates and to train them in proper work methods.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to interpret and administer labor contract provisions.
Ability to interpret Commonwealth and Departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a Game Farm Assistant Superintendent.
