FIELD INVESTIGATOR

DEFINITION: This is responsible field investigation work of a non-technical nature in the enforcement of state laws and regulations.

An employee in this class is responsible for determining and enforcing compliance with state requirements. Work may involve responsibility for an investigative and enforcement program within an assigned district, or field office, or a statewide investigative program of a more limited regulatory activity. Work is performed with initiative and independence, in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, but general supervision is received through written and oral instructions and review of reports submitted.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Makes investigations and inspections of a non-technical nature within an assigned district.

Investigates and enforces various tax laws and regulations within the state's largest metropolitan areas.

Conducts investigations of private employment agencies.

Performs investigations and reviews reports of paddock guards in enforcing racing rules and regulations.

Prepares reports of investigations and inspections.

Initiates prosecution of violators; testifies in court as a state witness.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and methods of field investigations and law enforcement.

Knowledge of the basic rules of legal evidence.

Skill in ascertaining facts by personal contact and observation and the examination of records.

Ability to explain and interpret effectively pertinent provisions of laws and regulations.

Ability to enforce laws and regulations with firmness of tact.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in all public contacts.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience in public contact work, including two years of experience in field investigation or law enforcement work;
