SAFETY INSPECTOR TRAINEE

DEFINITION: This is introductory field inspection work in the enforcement of state building, safety, and occupational health and safety laws and regulations.

An employee in this job receives classroom and on-the-job training designed to develop competency and skill in inspecting healthcare facilities, public office buildings and other public and private structures, equipment and materials for conformance with state building, safety and occupational health and safety laws and regulations. Work involves assisting Safety Inspectors in a variety of inspection assignments designed to acquaint the trainee with the full scope of inspection activities and responsibilities. As inspection knowledge and skills are acquired, employees are given more difficult tasks and increased responsibility. Close supervision is provided by a Safety Inspection Supervisor, who assigns work, gives detailed instructions, and reviews work in progress and upon completion for adherence to established technical standards and departmental procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in classroom and on-the-job training.

Assists in inspecting public and private hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities to determine compliance with safety laws and regulations.

Assists in inspecting and investigating various work locations of public sector employees to determine if buildings and related structures, apparatus, devices, equipment and materials are safe and healthful.

Assists in the preparation of detailed reports of inspections and investigations.

Travels to various work sites to conduct inspections and to receive training.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of safety principles and practices applicable to the construction, renovation, and utilization of healthcare, institutional or other public use buildings or related structures, machines, apparatus, devices, materials, or equipment.

Knowledge of workplace hazards and other safety and occupational health issues encountered by employees in their work environment.

Ability to read and interpret applicable building and safety laws and regulations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience related to the application or inspection of safety principles and practices of construction or utilization of commercial, industrial, healthcare or other buildings or structures, machines, apparatus, devices or equipment;

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions in this job require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
