JOB TITLE: STATE POLICE CADET

DEFINITION: This is trainee work in the field of law enforcement for the Pennsylvania State Police.
An employee in this job participates in formal classroom instruction and practical exercises designed to develop proficiency in providing commonwealth police services. Work involves instruction in such areas as commonwealth vehicle and criminal law, police vehicle operation, firearms use, officer safety, physical education, interpersonal relations, first aid, and patrol activities. All work is performed at or directed from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of professional law enforcement instructors who present and monitor training in accordance with established standards and regulations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)
• Receives training in the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, Motor Vehicle Code, and other related laws.
• Participates in formal coursework and practical exercises to learn the principles and practices associated with Rules of Criminal Procedure, criminal law evidence, and laws of arrest.
• Participates in formal coursework and practical exercises to learn the principles and practices associated with search and seizure, on-scene vehicle collisions, officer safety, interpersonal relations, investigations, interviews, interrogations, report writing, case preparation, and court testimony.
• Participates in physical fitness activities, swimming and water safety courses, and the American Red Cross Emergency Response Course.
• Receives training in operating police vehicles.
• Participates in formal coursework and practical exercises in the use of department firearms and the legal applications and restrictions of their use.
• Receives training in the use of specialized equipment and instruments including communications equipment, radar, breath test devices, body armor, and riot gear.
• Receives training in military courtesy, platoon formation, military drill, formal inspections, and related subjects.
• Participates in maintaining the cleanliness and order of quarters, buildings, grounds, and equipment.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Knowledge of mathematical applications of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to analyze and interpret laws and regulations.
• Ability to identify inconsistencies in behavior, information, and evidence.
• Ability to effectively recall details and facts.
• Ability to respond to incidents firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• Graduation from high school or an accredited G.E.D. certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be at least 20 years of age at time of application.
• Must be at least 21 years of age and cannot have reached 40 years of age upon appointment.
• Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license.
