JOB TITLE: FACILITY SAFETY SPECIALIST

JOB CODE: 74259

DEFINITION: This is professional work in coordinating, implementing, and analyzing safety programs at a state-operated facility.

An employee in this job coordinates, implements, and analyzes facility safety programs, including accident prevention, fire prevention, and security programs, to ensure the safety of facility residents, employees, and visitors. Work involves monitoring and evaluating facility safety programs and policies; participating in the development of facility safety policies; preparing and coordinating facility safety training; conducting safety drills and inspections; and investigating workplace accidents. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor who reviews work for overall quality and effectiveness in meeting established objectives and goals.

• Prepares and coordinates training and education programs regarding accident investigation, enforcement of safety rules and regulations, and preventive safety measures and devices.

• Coordinates, implements, and presents new or revised programs for employee safety, fire prevention, environmental safety, and security training.

• Participates in the development of facility safety policies and procedures to effectively implement safety programs.

• Conducts safety inspections, implements safety reporting systems, and integrates standard emergency medical equipment and practices into the facility’s safety program.

• Investigates accidents involving injuries or property damage to determine causal factors and recommends measures to prevent or minimize recurrences.

• Reviews plans and specifications for the purchase or construction of new equipment and facilities to ensure that departmental safety requirements are met.

• Presents workshops to facility staff on the development of various aspects of the facility safety program.

• Conducts drills and tests for required facility accreditations and maintains necessary documentation.

• Prepares reports relating to accident and injury data, fire and prevention data, and security operations.

• Attends and participates in workshops and seminars pertinent to various aspects of institutional safety management.

• Serves as a member of the facility safety committee.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, principles, and practices of accident prevention, fire prevention, and safety.

• Knowledge of occupational, industrial, fire, and security safety hazards.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to analyze and interpret laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

• Ability to analyze and interpret written and numerical information.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, fire science, emergency management, public safety, or a closely related field;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require that an employee attain Advanced Safety Certification from the National Safety Council within five years of the date of employment.
