INSTALLATION POLICE OFFICER, DMVA

DEFINITION: This is general duty police work at the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Fort Indiantown Gap installation.

An employee in this job provides police services and protection to employees, the public, property, facilities and grounds. Work involves enforcing federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations through warning, citation, or arrest; patrolling federal and state-owned grounds and buildings; responding to calls for assistance; investigating vehicle accidents and reports of crimes committed; collecting evidence and witness statements; investigating missing persons reports; and providing traffic and crowd control. Work may also involve providing assistance to police departments in neighboring jurisdictions; and testifying and presenting evidence in court proceedings. An employee in this job is a sworn police officer and exercises the power of arrest. Work is performed independently and involves situations that may be dangerous or stressful in nature. Work is reviewed by a supervising officer through personal inspection and review of reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Patrols federal and state-owned buildings and grounds at Fort Indiantown Gap by foot and by vehicle.

Investigates vehicle accidents and suspected crimes by interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

Enforces vehicle laws by issuing warnings or citations for vehicle code violations.

Identifies what laws and statutes are violated when a criminal act is suspected.

Arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.

Responds to calls for assistance from central dispatch, police departments in neighboring jurisdictions, and the public.

Determines the nature of reported emergencies and notifies fire and medical personnel or requests assistance from other jurisdictions as necessary.

Prepares reports of probable cause to obtain a search or arrest warrant.

Investigates reports of missing persons and requests assistance from other police jurisdictions as necessary.

Investigates building and facility alarms that have been activated.

Directs traffic at public events and at vehicle accident sites.

Testifies in court and legal proceedings to present evidence or act as a witness.

Administers appropriate first-aid treatment to persons requiring immediate medical attention in situations where other emergency personnel are not present.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques.

Knowledge of the crime and motor vehicle codes.

Knowledge of interviewing procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of methods used in conducting criminal investigations.

Knowledge of methods and practices of security patrolling and incident reporting.

Knowledge of group behavior and the principles and practices of group control.

Knowledge of safety procedures and legal controls concerning the use of firearms.

Knowledge of first-aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods.

Skill in the use and care of offensive and defensive weapons including firearms.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Successful completion of the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission Certified Basic Police Academy (Act 120) training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
