INSTALLATION POLICE OFFICER SUPERVISOR, DMVA

DEFINITION: This is supervisory and general duty police work at the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Fort Indiantown Gap installation.

An employee in this job participates in and supervises the provision of police services and protection to employees, the public, property, facilities, and grounds. Work involves supervising the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations through warning, citation, or arrest; the review of incident reports and follow-up investigations; the patrol of federal and state-owned grounds and buildings; the response to calls for assistance; and the provision of traffic and crowd control. Work may also involve providing assistance to police departments in neighboring jurisdictions; and testifying and presenting evidence in court proceedings. An employee in this job is a sworn police officer and exercises the power of arrest. Supervision is exercised over subordinate Installation Police Officers. Work is performed independently and involves situations that may be dangerous or stressful in nature. Work is reviewed by the Installation Police Chief through personal inspection and review of reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Prepares and maintains shift assignments, time and attendance records, and duty rosters.

Supervises and conducts foot and vehicle patrols of federal and state-owned buildings and grounds at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Supervises the preparation of initial investigatory information pertaining to vehicle accidents and suspected crimes.

Performs follow-up investigations by interviewing suspects and witnesses and recommending arrest or further investigation.

Supervises the enforcement of motor vehicle laws.

Arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.

Supervises the response to calls for assistance from central dispatch, police departments in neighboring jurisdictions, and the public.

Determines the nature of reported emergencies and notifies fire and medical personnel or requests assistance from other jurisdictions as necessary.

Testifies in court and legal proceedings to present evidence or act as a witness.

Administers appropriate first-aid treatment to persons requiring immediate medical attention in situations where other emergency personnel are not present.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

An employee in this job may participate in the performance of their subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques.

Knowledge of the crime and motor vehicle codes.

Knowledge of interviewing procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of methods used in conducting criminal investigations.

Knowledge of methods and practices of security patrolling and incident reporting.

Knowledge of group behavior and the principles and practices of group control.

Knowledge of safety procedures and legal controls concerning use of firearms.

Knowledge of first-aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods.

Skill in the use and care of offensive and defensive weapons to include a firearm.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience as an Installation Police Officer, DMVA;

                                                                                                                                                  or

Two years of experience as a law enforcement officer, and successful completion of the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission Certified Basic Police Academy (Act 120) training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
