SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The custodial job series describes cleaning and sanitation work.

DEFINITION: This is routine manual work in maintaining the cleanliness of state operated facilities.

An employee in this job performs a variety of standard or aseptic cleaning and sanitation tasks. Work involves cleaning buildings, gathering waste and recyclable materials, and using and maintaining custodial supplies and cleaning equipment. Employees in this job do not require close supervision of assigned day-to-day custodial duties. However, work is subject to inspection while in progress or upon completion for adherence to established standards of cleanliness. Detailed supervisory guidance and review is provided for new or unusual situations and changes in operating procedures.

• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, waxes, and buffs floors.

• Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture and fixtures.

• Washes and cleans windows, walls, and doors.

• Cleans toilets, sinks, and mirrors in restrooms and replaces restroom supplies.

• Utilizes tools and equipment of the custodial trade in the performance of cleaning tasks.

• Gathers and disposes of waste products, recyclable materials, infectious waste, and hazardous materials according to safe material handling guidelines.

• Moves furniture and equipment when necessary to perform custodial tasks.

• Secures and maintains cleaning equipment; requests, picks up, and stores related supplies.

• Reports needed repairs to crew leader or supervisor.

• Shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks, and assists in keeping immediate outside premises and building entrances in an orderly condition.

• Performs incidental assignments, such as removing ashes, replacing lightbulbs, and making simple repairs.

• Documents work performed.

• Performs related work as required.
