SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The custodial job series describes cleaning and sanitation work.
DEFINITION: This is lead work in maintaining the cleanliness of state operated facilities.
An employee in this job functions as a lead worker for employees performing a variety of standard or aseptic cleaning and sanitation duties. Work involves cleaning buildings, gathering waste and recyclable materials, and using and maintaining custodial supplies and cleaning equipment. Employees in this job perform assigned day-to-day custodial duties independently. However, supervisory guidance and review is provided for new or unusual situations and changes in operating procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
• Work is distinguished from the lower-level job based on lead work responsibilities over routine custodial work. Lead work is a permanent organizational relationship that includes assigning and explaining work, conducting on-the-job training, providing guidance, and reviewing the unit’s work for adherence to standards.

• Functions as a lead worker for a variety of cleaning and sanitation work.
• Participates in the work of the unit and ensures results are consistent with operational and organizational standards.
• Trains new custodial staff in cleaning methods and materials used on the job.
• Requisitions and distributes cleaning supplies and monitors the use of supplies and equipment.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in custodial work.
• Knowledge of aseptic and sanitation materials hazards and safety guidelines.
• Ability to read and understand written materials.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• One year as a Custodial Worker 1 (commonwealth title);
or
• One year of experience performing custodial work.
