LABORER

DEFINITION: This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual labor.

An employee in this class performs light and heavy manual laboring tasks in a wide variety of construction and maintenance work. Some assignments require limited skills, which can be readily learned on the job. Usually work is performed under the immediate direction of an employee of a higher classification, but many tasks assigned are routine and repetitive in nature and after once being learned, can be carried on without difficulty and under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Cuts grass with a hand scythe or hand mower.

Assists carpenter in building wooden structures; selects and saws lumber to specified size; nails sheeting to studs; cleans used lumber and wooden and metal forms.

Digs holes and trenches with pick and shovel; rakes and sweeps leaves, dirt, etc.

Moves furniture and equipment to various floors and buildings.

Serves as a helper on large equipment; assists in servicing and making operating repairs to equipment.

Loads trucks with sand, gravel, and waste material using a hand shovel; shovels snow from walks, hydrants or drainage ditches, and pipes.

Digs drainage ditches, cleans out culverts, and fills in washouts.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: No previous experience or training required.
