HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER

DEFINITION: This is manual and unskilled work in highway maintenance and construction operations.

An employee in this class performs manual laboring duties and uses hand tools on highway maintenance and construction projects. On occasion, an employee may be required to drive an automobile or pick-up truck. New duties are assigned with detailed instructions and the use of hand tools and project work methods are usually demonstrated. All work is subject to close supervision, in progress and upon completion, although routine, repetitive duties, once learned, may be performed more independently.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Loads and unloads materials and tools from trucks.

Patches highway surfaces by cleaning broken or unsuitable material from holes, trimming edges, filling holes with patching material and leveling material surface.

Drives automobile or pick-up truck to pick up, transport and deliver equipment parts, equipment, or personnel to the garage area or construction site; drives the pick-up at the construction site transporting personnel, equipment parts, and equipment to include sign boards or towing of portable equipment.

Washes, dusts and polishes floors and fixtures; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; shovels snow, sweeps walks and disposes of trash.

Digs drainage ditches, cleans out culverts, and fills in washouts.

Cuts grass on roadsides using hand scythes and mowers.

Using hand tools, erects and tears down snow fences.

Assists in the installation, repair, and painting of guard fence.

Cleans and seals cracks in highway surfaces.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to understand and follow oral instruction.

Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: No previous experience or training required.
