LABOR FOREMAN 1

DEFINITION: This is lead work over a small group of laborers performing manual work.

An employee in this class lays out and participates in the work of laborers as a lead worker responsible for the efficient accomplishment of assigned tasks. Tasks assigned are ordinarily of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature. Lead work involves assigning work, providing assistance, instructing workers, and reviewing the work for adherence to standards. Difficult or technical work decisions are normally referred to a supervisor. Detailed assignments are received in all but routine tasks, and the work is closely checked during progress and upon completion.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Leads laborers in routine building or road construction, renovations and/or repair, or buildings and grounds maintenance work.

Leads laborers planting trees in reforestation work and planting and cultivating crops on game preserves.

Operates a light truck to transport crew and to perform duties.

Instructs and otherwise assists those being directed.

Keeps time records and develops basic records.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the equipment and methods used in building or road construction, renovations and/or repair, and/or buildings and grounds work.

Knowledge of safety rules pertaining to the use of equipment used in basic construction and maintenance work.

Ability to learn to plan and lead the work of a small group of unskilled and semi-skilled workers by assigning work, providing assistance, instructing workers, and reviewing work for adherence to standards.

Ability to use hand tools and light power equipment commonly used in building or road construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance work.

Ability to make time and materials reports.

Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in performing manual labor on construction or maintenance work;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Using agency may require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.
