HIGHWAY SIGN WORKER
DEFINITION: This is skilled work in painting, installing and maintaining all types of signs for state highways in a county maintenance unit.
The employee has responsibility for use of standard trade practices in the painting, location, erection, and maintenance of all types of traffic, safety and other highway signs. Work usually requires lead worker responsibilities over a helper in completing assignments. Work is normally received in the form of job orders and other work is done according to prescribed schedules or instructions. The employee receives supervision from a highway foreman and work is normally examined upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assists in locating and installing directional, warning, routing, and other types of highway signs.
Replaces broken posts or damaged signs; cuts weeds and brush around signs; paints sign posts, bridges, and other structures.
Paints and repaints signs in a paint shop; mixes paints according to specifications; stencils and hand letters signs.
Operates paint spray gun and other equipment in stenciling or painting crosswalks, traffic separators, parking stalls, and other markings and signs; assists in the operation of the painting machine for white lining state highways.
Operates and maintains necessary tools and equipment.
Functions as a lead worker over helpers.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of all types of highway signs, and of rules, regulations and standard practices governing their form, installation and uses.
Knowledge of paint brushes, tools and equipment, materials, and methods used in sign painting, installation and maintenance.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in painting work.
Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
Ability to develop skill in the operation and care of allied mechanical equipment.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a painter's helper or other work leading to journeyman skills in sign painting; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth school grade;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
