EQUIPMENT OPERATOR A
DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation of equipment and/or single chassis vehicles with a gross vehicle weight between 10,001 and 32,000 pounds used in the transport of personnel and materials, and/or construction, grounds and maintenance work.
An employee in this class also performs manual work when not operating equipment. Work is assigned with instructions clearly outlining the scope of each project. However, little or no instructions are received in the techniques of operating the equipment or the methods used in obtaining the specified results unless difficult problems arise.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates vans, buses and single-chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight between 10,001 and 32,000 pounds used in the transport of patients/residents, prepared foods, soiled and/or clean laundry; sanitizes vehicles/trucks as appropriate and hauls materials used in the construction, grounds or general maintenance work, and operates equipment used in snow removal and cindering operations, as needed.
Operates tractor mounted grass and brush mowers (excluding riding lawn mowers), hi-lifts or front end loaders with a bucket capacity of less than three cubic yards used in maintenance work and utilities operations.
Performs manual work when not operating trucks or equipment, including the loading and unloading of trucks.
Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment, or assists automotive mechanics making major repairs to equipment.
Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintains records of operated equipment including those of commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, as appropriate.
Performs other related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the techniques, methods and practices applied to the care and safe operation of large vans, buses and trucks with a gross vehicle weight between 10,001 and 32,000 pounds utilized at this level.
Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
Ability to check, inspect, service and make running adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
Ability to perform related clerical tasks and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to use hand power tools safely and properly.
Ability to exhibit sufficient physical strength to lift heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Six months experience in the operation and maintenance of large vans, buses and single-chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions require that employees in this class have a commercial driver's license (CDL) and any endorsements required to operate specific equipment, in order to meet operational needs.
