JOB TITLE: DRILL OPERATOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Drill Operator series describes work in operating and maintaining core and auger boring equipment.

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation of drill equipment used for taking surface and sub-surface soils, pavement, and rock samples.

An employee in this job operates drilling equipment used in surface and sub-surface exploration. Work involves operating core and auger boring equipment or assisting in operating complex core boring and combination auger-core boring equipment to obtain samples, ensuring samples are properly lifted and identified, and resolving routine field problems encountered. Work is assigned with detailed instructions from a supervisor who resolves unusual problems and reviews work for results attained.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Operates auger boring equipment or assists in the operation of heavy-duty core boring and combination auger-core boring equipment to obtain surface and sub-surface soils, pavement, and rock samples.

• Operates a large truck and trailer used in relocating equipment; assists in assembling and leveling drilling apparatus; operates augers for core boring; and extracts and boxes cores.

• Operates core or auger boring equipment to obtain samples; makes necessary field adjustments; maintains a field log by recording data; and assists in the maintenance of equipment.

• Operates electric core drill to obtain pavement core samples that show pavement core condition, depth, location, and subgrade type.

• Drives drilling rigs between job sites.

• Forwards core and other samples to storage areas.

• Assists in locating a test site.

• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance work on equipment and cleans and services equipment.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the operation of core and auger boring equipment and drilling apparatus.

• Knowledge of the properties and physical characteristics of sub-surface rock and soil strata.

• Knowledge of preventative maintenance requirements and minor repair techniques for assigned drilling equipment.

• Knowledge of the standard safety operating procedures of assigned drilling equipment.

• Ability to operate motor vehicles and equipment, including those with a manual transmission.

• Ability to identify all drilling or coring hazards associated with marked overhead and underground utilities.

• Ability to interpret and follow instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Two years of experience in the operation of core and auger boring equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• All positions require, at time of hire, an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.

• All positions require, at time of hire, possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

• All candidates must demonstrate, at time of interview, successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

• All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
