MACHINIST

DEFINITION: This is skilled work at the journey level in the operation of machine tools for the fabrication of metal items of machinery and equipment.

An employee in this class performs work requiring adherence to close tolerances in the making and repairing of tools, machinery, and machine equipment. Duties may include lead worker responsibilities over helpers. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions, generally accompanied by plans or sketches. Employees determine work methods and practices on a particular assignment, although any special features are outlined by a technically qualified supervisor. Work is subject to inspection by a supervisor while in process and upon completion.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Shapes metal objects using lathes, shapers, planners, slotters, power saws, milling machines, drill presses, and similar metal-working power equipment; and uses taps, dies, reamers, files, and other hand tools.

Fashions shafts, bearings, gears, fiber insulators, valve stems, machine parts, carburetor parts, and a wide variety of other items of machinery and equipment; refaces valves and flywheels; cuts threads; re-babbits bearings; grinds crankshafts; and bores brake drums and cylinder blocks.

Dismantles equipment such as motors, pumps, engines, compressors, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment, and motor vehicles; locates source of poor or inadequate performance, makes necessary repairs; and assembles and tests equipment.

Makes repairs to a wide variety of appliances, tools, furnishings, and other metal objects.

Makes machinery repairs and adjustments in the repair shop or in the field.

Uses both electric and acetylene welders or soldering irons in making repairs.

Cares for and maintains metal-working hand tools and power machinery.

Functions as a lead worker over a group of helpers engaged in less skilled operations in the machine shop by assigning work, providing assistance, instructing them, and reviewing work for adherence to standards.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices used in the machinist trade.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the machinist trade.

Knowledge of the operation and repair of a wide variety of tools, machinery and machine equipment.

Ability to care for, use, and operate a wide variety of metalworking hand tools and power driven machinery.

Ability to work from sketches, blueprints, and models.

Ability to gauge work carefully, using micrometers and other precision- type measuring instruments.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Four years of experience in the machinist trade, or completion of an approved apprenticeship;
