JOB TITLE: WELDER

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in cutting and joining metal components using welding equipment and related processes to repair, maintain, and fabricate parts, machinery, and structures.

An employee in this job performs routine and specialized welding repair and fabrication assignments. Work includes welding, brazing, soldering, cutting, tempering, and shaping ferrous and non-ferrous metals through the operation of acetylene, arc, tungsten inert gas (TIG) or metal inert gas (MIG) welding, and related shop equipment. Work involves laying out equipment and materials and determining work processes to fabricate parts and equipment; cutting, shaping, welding, and repairing metal structures or parts for a wide range of applications; and assigning and demonstrating welding related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees. Work is performed independently and checked in progress and upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Determines materials, sequence of tasks, work methods, equipment, and tools needed for fabrication, repair, and maintenance assignments.

• Cuts and joins steel plate, sheet metal, tubing, pipe, cast iron, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, or other metals used in the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of equipment.

• Combines components using butt, edge, corner, tee, and lap joint welds.

• Operates welding-related shop equipment such as iron workers, hydraulic presses, cutoff saws, band saws, drill presses, and magnetic drills.

• Cleans and degreases parts to be welded using wire brushes, grinders, or solvents and removes slag from the finished weld.

• Studies sketches, diagrams, or parts to be repaired or fabricated and determines the functional modifications needed.

• Measures, lays out, and assembles components, materials, and equipment in preparation for welding.

• Fabricates parts and equipment through cutting, shaping, grinding, and welding materials and tests their functionality throughout the fabrication process.

• Welds cracked and broken parts made of cast iron, aluminum, steel, or other metals for motor vehicles, including trucks, snowplows, concrete mixers, cranes, graders, and other highway automotive maintenance and construction machinery.

• Cuts and welds steel components in bridge structures, including the replacement of broken or weakened parts, and welds stiffener angles, plates, and steel forms for concrete.

• Performs structural bridge repairs, such as removing and replacing welds and rivets with high strength bolts, removing projecting steel and caulking seams, and repairing and straightening broken or bent bridge members and grated bridge decks.

• Performs cutting and welding operations on plumbing, steam, oil, gas, and related piping systems.

• Lays out, cuts, fabricates, and repairs a wide variety of parts, equipment, and fixtures, such as tables, racks, tools, appliances, road signage, and fencing structures.

• Estimates time and material costs for repairs.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance persons on welding related tasks.

• Complies with safety regulations and standards for work assignments, including wearing personal protective equipment.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organization requirements.

• Operates a motor vehicle.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the welding trade.

• Knowledge of the composition of the various ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys, fluxes, welding rods, and coating and other materials used in welding.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools essential to welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to use acetylene, arc, TIG, or MIG welding equipment.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and drawings.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Three years of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures;

or

• Completion of a three-year, high school Vo-Tech training program in welding and eighteen months of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures;

or

• Completion of an approved welder apprentice program;

or

• A welding certificate D1.1 from the American Welding Society;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.
