JOB TITLE: LOCKSMITH

JOB CODE: 93450

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of locks and peripherals.

An employee in this job is responsible for installing, repairing, replacing, and maintaining mechanical, pneumatic, and electronically controlled locks and devices. Work involves installing new locking mechanisms per applicable codes and specifications; troubleshooting key and locking device problems; performing repairs, adjustments, and parts replacement; disassembling, resetting or re-pinning, and reassembling locks; fabricating master and replacement keys; and maintaining corresponding inventories and records. Work may involve accessing a variety of software platforms to identify issues with electronically controlled locks; addressing the mechanical and electronic issues with these devices; and assigning and demonstrating locksmith related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of specific work assignments. Work is performed independently and checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Installs manual, electronic, and pneumatic locks and peripherals according to specifications, manufacturer instructions, key control guidelines, and applicable building, fire, and life safety codes.

• Uses a variety of small hand and bench tools to install and repair locks, set lock cylinders, change lock combinations, fabricate parts of locking mechanisms, and open jammed locks.

• Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, maintains, and opens locks in a variety of building and office equipment, to include doors, desks, safes, filing cabinets, medication cabinets and carts, fire alarm boxes, dead bolts, and related fixtures.

• Maintains key control and lock combinations, lock location, and lock inspection and maintenance records to ensure organization and security of locks and devices.

• Accesses security software systems to assist in troubleshooting issues with electronically controlled locks and card access devices.

• Makes new master and replacement keys using various machinery, such as key duplicators, cutters, and grinders.

• Inspects and tests locks for wear and malfunctions and performs maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, replacing, and adjusting parts.

• Fabricates and repairs springs, tumblers, spindles, or levers to fit specific locks.

• Performs installation and repair of peripheral locking devices and door accessories, including door closers, door checks, doorknobs, casement operators, panic bars, door strikes, astragals, door coordinators, and hinges, in accordance with applicable building, fire, and life safety codes and specifications.

• Disassembles and re-pins or resets locks, cuts replacement keys, and updates records.

• Determines the number of locks able to be coded alike, the lock codes, and the pin sizing based on the master key system design.

• Computes changes in lock, vault, and safe combinations and keys to maintain security standards and avoid duplication.

• Performs vault and safe penetrations to access and replace failed electronic or mechanical devices.

• Researches locks and peripheral device parts, components, and operations using manufacturer manuals and on-line resources.

• Assists authorities in investigations concerning break-ins or unwarranted entries.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance employees on locksmithing related tasks.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates a motor vehicle.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices of the locksmithing trade.

• Knowledge of the safety and hazard precautions related to locksmithing.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools essential to the locksmithing trade.

• Knowledge of card access systems and associated electronic hardware.

• Knowledge of building, fire, and life safety codes applicable to the installation of locks and peripherals.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to read, interpret, and apply manufacturer manuals and instructions to the installation and repair of locks and peripherals.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title);

or

• Three years of experience in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of locks and peripherals;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
