SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Carpenter series describes work in constructing and repairing structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials.

DEFINITION: This is skilled and technical work in the planning, lay out, construction, installation, repair, restoration, and maintenance of structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials.

An employee in this job plans, lays out, coordinates, and executes carpentry and related construction projects and assignments. Work involves developing plans, performing calculations, and preparing estimates for complex carpentry projects; developing the lay out, procedures, and sequence of work through the review and application of blueprints, building codes, and specifications; and coordinating, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing work performed by lower-level employees during these projects. Work includes laying out, coordinating, building, and troubleshooting complex carpentry related projects such as those involving multiple stages of construction, additional building trades such as roofing or masonry, or altering and reinforcing the walls and supports that impact structural integrity. Work may include planning, delivering, or coordinating carpentry related training for lower-level employees and ensuring carpentry related contracted services are performed to specification. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion by a supervisor for quality and timeliness.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

     • Work is differentiated from the lower-level job based on the responsibility for planning, laying out, coordinating, and executing carpentry projects that are complex and unique based on scope, techniques, processes, and materials. Such projects include historic building restorations; new building construction; full gut renovations of a building; staircase design and construction; and alteration, modification, or removal and replacement of load-bearing walls or structures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Reviews blueprints, building codes, drawings, and specifications; and determines the work lay-out, calculations, procedures, tools, and materials to accomplish projects.

• Creates and communicates construction drawings and work layout, including the placement of utilities and supporting mechanical, plumbing, and electrical components, and identifying other construction concerns on the work site.

• Determines time, equipment, labor and material resources, and work methods needed for a variety of construction, installation, repair, restoration, and maintenance projects.

• Monitors, guides, and instructs employees engaged in resolving challenging repair and installation issues, such as those involving a high degree of precision, fit, finish, and detail.

• Determines the procedures for demolition and area preparation, sequence of work, and calculations for materials when altering or constructing supporting walls and other structures around or above it, such as lintels, arches, and load bearing beams.

• Plans, lays out, coordinates, and constructs concrete forms for foundations, walls, and pads based on drawings and specifications.

• Plans, lays out, coordinates, and constructs roofing systems, to include decking, framing, insulation, cut-outs, and laying roofing materials and accessories.

• Provides coordination and direction and assigns and reviews work for trades and maintenance employees on carpentry projects.

• Makes adjustments during construction and installation processes to address issues not accounted for in plans and drawings.

• Updates and maintains technical and archival drawings or records based on construction, installation, restoration, and repair alterations.

• Uses advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles.

• Identifies training needs of lower-level Carpenters and other employees based on inspection of work and observation of work methods.

• Participates in the training or retraining of employees related to the construction, installation, repair, restoration, and maintenance of structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of the lower-level job and other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices of the carpentry trade.

• Knowledge of regulations, building codes, and the safety and hazard precautions related to carpentry and construction.

• Knowledge of the care and use of hand, power, and industrial tools for the construction, installation, repair, restoration, and maintenance of structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve structural issues in buildings.

• Ability to determine the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required for a job.

• Ability to execute a variety of joinery techniques, such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuits, and mortise and tenons.

• Ability to read and interpret HVAC, architectural, plumbing, and electrical system blueprints.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra, and geometry.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Five years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, restoration, or maintenance of structures and articles made from wood, composite, and wood substitute materials including two years performing skilled carpentry work in commercial, industrial, or multi-unit residential structures;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training including two years performing skilled carpentry work in commercial, industrial, or multi-unit residential structures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
