JOB TITLE: ROOFER TINSMITH

JOB CODE: 94110

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of roofs and sheet metal parts and accessories.

An employee in this job installs, replaces, repairs, and maintains a variety of roofing systems, components, and materials ensuring proper overlap, seaming, and coverage. Work involves removing existing roofing materials, cleaning and preparing work areas, and installing replacement roofing materials and accessories. Work includes measuring, cutting, fitting, and installing metal roofing parts and performing repairs and preventative maintenance on roof surfaces, sub-surfaces, and accessories. Work may include fabricating a variety of miscellaneous sheet metal components; performing general carpentry on roof decking, beams, framing, and joists; and assigning and demonstrating roofing related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of specific work assignments. Work is performed independently and checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

• Lays, fastens, and seals a variety of roofing materials, including asphalt, shingle, rubber, tile, slate, composite, and metal while ensuring proper overlap, seaming, and coverage of the materials and sub-surfaces.

• Determines the materials, sequence of tasks, and work methods needed for installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance assignments.

• Removes damaged roofing materials to trace and identify the source and cause of leaks; and cleans, dries, and prepares work area and sub-surfaces.

• Patches and repairs damaged areas and installs replacement roofing materials and accessories according to standard trade practices and the types of damage.

• Measures, cuts, bends, shapes, assembles, and installs metal roofing accessories, such as gravel guards, flashings, gutters, rain spouts, valleys, vents, pipes, and chimney linings.

• Cuts into roofing and installs items, such as pipes, vents, and skylights, and applies standard trades practices to ensure roof is properly sealed for waterproofing.

• Fabricates metal parts, such as duct work, metal stands, funnels, float trays, pans screens, paint trays, and miscellaneous items.

• Uses tools, such as nail guns, shingle cutters, metal snips, saws, roofing knives, hook blades, shovels, roofing hammers, pry bars, measuring tapes, caulking guns, and trowels in roofing removal, installation, and repair.

• Uses flat scrapers, soldering irons, stakes, seaming pliers, tin snips, sheet hammers, and anvils to shape, cut, and assemble metal parts and accessories.

• Utilizes shop equipment during fabrication process including, manual and press brakes, super duty presses, plasma cutters, hydraulic ironworkers, stomp shears, vertical mills, variable speed milling machines, and horizontal band saws.

• Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on roof surfaces, sub-surfaces, and accessories.

• Inspects, repairs, and replaces damaged roof decking, framing, beams, and joists.

• Complies with safety regulations and standards for work assignments, including the use of personal protective equipment.

• Reads, interprets, and verifies blueprints and drawings which indicate construction, installation, replacement, and repair specifications.

• Hauls and erects ladders and scaffolding in preparation for working at heights.

• Estimates time and materials for completing roofing assignments.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance employees on roofing and tinsmithing related tasks.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the roofing trade.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the tinsmithing trade.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools essential to the roofing and tinsmithing trades.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to apply roofing materials and accessories according to layout and specifications.

• Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and drawings.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title);

or

• Three years of experience in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of roofs and sheet metal parts and accessories;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
