DEFINITION: This is skilled masonry work in the construction, repair, alteration, and maintenance of concrete and mortar-built structures.

An employee in this job builds, repairs, alters, and maintains structures made of concrete, brick, block, stone, and related materials. Work involves removing damaged materials or performing demolition of existing structures; cleaning and preparing work area and sub-surfaces; cutting, shaping, and setting building units; mixing and applying mortar, grout, concrete, and other building materials; and finishing joints and surfaces. Work includes pouring and finishing concrete structures by building or using prefabricated forms, and assigning and demonstrating masonry related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of specific work assignments. Work is performed independently and is checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Lays common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta and other tiles, and various artificial and natural stone in building and repairing structures, such as walls, walkways, steps, bridges, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers, and catch basins.

• Builds or uses prefabricated concrete forms, lays rebar and conduit, pours and finishes concrete structures according to specifications; strips and disassembles forms upon completion.

• Determines materials, sequence of tasks, and work methods needed for installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance assignments.

• Cleans and prepares work area and sub-surfaces based on standard practices for the masonry materials and specifications of the project.

• Uses a variety of hand and power tools to cut and shape building materials, including air tools, knapping and other hammers, circular saws, axes, picks, chisels, trowels, jointers, and edgers.

• Repairs stone and brick joints by cleaning, cutting, raking, and repointing with mortar and caulking compound so repairs match the original structure.

• Mixes mortar and concrete to proper proportions for desired consistency and includes additives as needed.

• Lays out work using chalk lines, plumb bobs, tapes, squares, and levels.

• Pours, repairs, and patches a wide variety of concrete structures, to include sidewalks, bridges, curbs, ramps, walls, parking lots, pads, drains, catch basins, manholes, and pools.

• Constructs windowsills, lintels, and arches capable of supporting the walls above them and ensures that courses are level and laid evenly and completed work blends with existing structures.

• Inspects structures to identify the cause of problems or defects in masonry materials and recommends a remediation plan.

• Cuts, lays, and sets a variety of tiles and pavers.

• Reads, interprets, and verifies blueprints and drawings indicating construction and repair specifications.

• Mixes and applies plaster and stucco to finished interior and exterior walls and ceilings.

• Hauls and erects ladders and scaffolding in preparation for working at heights.

• Operates machinery to haul and place materials such as utility trailers and skid loaders and associated attachments.

• Estimates time and materials required to complete masonry projects.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance employees on masonry-related tasks.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the masonry trade.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools in the masonry trade.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and drawings.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title);

or

• Three years of masonry experience in the construction, repair, and maintenance of concrete and mortar-built structures;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
