HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN TRAINEE

DEFINITION: This is entrance level training work to develop proficiency in the operation and maintenance of electrical distribution systems and a high voltage sub-station.

Employees in this job participate in an eighteen month on-the-job training program under the supervision of a High Voltage Electrician Foreman or other maintenance management staff. Assignments are designed to develop the employee's ability to apply the knowledge and skill of the high voltage electrician field to the solution of practical problems, increase the employee's ability to identify problems, and develop solutions which conform to agency policies, rules, and regulations as well as high voltage industry standards. Employees receive training in the legal requirements of high voltage electrical work, including the purpose, format and requirements for maintaining a variety of records. Work may include assignments on various electrical generating and distribution systems or on a high voltage sub-station to increase the employee's awareness of the scope of high voltage electrical work performed in the Commonwealth. Work is closely monitored while in progress and upon completion for technical accuracy and soundness.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop proficiency in designated segments of basic operational knowledge, maintenance of normal operations, and system breakdown and repairs.

Receives training in the analysis and total operation of the Capitol Complex high voltage sub-station.

Develops blueprint-reading skills to trace underground routing of electrical cable.

Learns gear room locations, modes of operation, the correct method of switching, blocking, and grounding, and the proper implementation of the safe shutdown of electrical equipment.

Reads schematics to identify and resolve problems.

Identifies and demonstrates the safe use of splice kits and splicing tapes.

Assists high voltage electricians with making emergency power cutouts and substitutions to maintain electrical power in the event of breakdowns or repairs.

Develops proficiency in the cleaning, adjusting, repair, and testing of electrical control equipment and power systems.

Develops proficiency in the preventive maintenance of emergency standby power systems.

Develops proficiency in troubleshooting, relamping, cleaning, and reballasting exterior lighting.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity.

Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the electrical trade.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the required safety precautions of electrical services work.

Knowledge of electrical codes, and state and federal electrical regulations.

Skill in the care and use of standard tools, metering equipment and testing devices of the electrical trade.

Ability to adhere strictly to safety, legal, and procedural rules, regulations, and requirements.

Ability to read blueprints and schematics.

Ability to prepare and interpret logs and reports.

Ability to read and interpret federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and standards applicable to high voltage electrical work.

Ability to obtain a Master Electrician license.

Ability to assess and safely respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.

Ability to perform physically demanding manual tasks in temperature extremes, and work at a variety of worksites, such as underground access points, confined spaces, and high altitudes, such as towers.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Five years experience in the electrical trade, or completion of an approved electrician apprenticeship;

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a journey electrician license from a recognized licensing authority.
