JOB TITLE: ELECTRICIAN TRAINEE

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Electrician series describes work in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, components, and equipment that require up to 480 volts of electricity.

DEFINITION: This is entry level training work in the tools, techniques, and processes used to install, repair, replace, test, and maintain electrical systems, components, and equipment that operate with up to 480 volts of electricity.

An employee in this job participates in a 24-month structured and on-the-job training program designed to gain proficiency in working with electrical systems, components, and equipment. An employee initially performs a limited range of duties with instructions, including preventative maintenance, routine repairs, replacements, and installations; and assisting with large or complex assignments. Work assignments become increasingly more complex and are performed with greater independence and variety as learning progresses and knowledge and proficiency are attained. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for competence, quality, and adherence to established guidelines.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Assists in troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing electrical components in a wide variety of building equipment and fixtures, such as electric motors, power circuitry, and electronic controls.

• Participates in measuring, cutting, bending, and running conduit and wire to specific lengths and angles.

• Participates in removing existing electrical wiring and components from within structures and assists in installing new wiring and components.

• Assists in tracing and diagnosing power issues using a variety of testing instruments.

• Assists in replacing worn or failed switches, relays, and outlets.

• Participates in performing preventative maintenance tasks on electrical panels, equipment, and generators.

• Participates in resetting circuit breakers after power outages and testing electrical operations to ensure electrical systems and equipment are functional.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trade.

• Knowledge of electrical codes and regulations relevant to electrical systems, components, and equipment that operate with up to 480 volts of electricity.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools for working with electrical systems, components, and equipment.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, manufacturers’ manuals, and schematics.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• An associate’s degree in electrical technology, electrical engineering, or electronics;

or

• Completion of a two-year, post-secondary technical training program in electrical technology, electrical engineering, or electronics;

or

• Completion of a three-year, high school Vo-Tech training program in electrical technology, electrical engineering, or electronics, and six months experience in the installation, repair, or maintenance of electrical systems, components, and equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
