SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Electrician series describes work in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, components, and equipment that require up to 480 volts of electricity.

DEFINITION: This is technical and skilled work in the planning, lay out, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, components, and equipment that operate with up to 480 volts of electricity.

An employee in this job plans, lays out, coordinates, and executes electrical installation, renovation, repair, and replacement projects and assignments. Work involves developing plans, performing calculations, and preparing estimates for electrical projects; developing the project layout, procedures, and sequence of work through the review and application of blueprints, schematics, engineering drawings, and building and electrical codes; and coordinating, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing the work performed by lower-level employees during these projects. Work includes identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving electrical issues; and laying out the routing, placement, and arrangement of systems, circuits, controls, and equipment for electrical projects. Work may include planning, delivering, or coordinating electrical-related training for lower-level employees; and ensuring electrical-related contracted services are performed to specification. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion by a supervisor for quality and timeliness.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

     • Work is differentiated from the lower-level jobs based on the responsibility for planning, laying out, coordinating, and completing electrical projects such as new system installations, full gut renovations, and new construction that require assessing a facility’s electrical system’s design, load capacity, circuitry, equipment, and electronic controls and applying these parameters to the selection, routing, placement, and arrangement of electrical equipment and components.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Determines time, equipment, labor and material resources, and work methods needed for a variety of specialized installation, repair, and maintenance projects.

• Inspects structures to assess material and equipment needs, establishes the sequence of work, determines the arrangement of electrical components, and plans work around physical obstructions.

• Locates, identifies, and marks placement of electrical components, fixtures, and wiring for full gut renovations and new construction projects.

• Provides direction to Electricians, Trainees, and other employees on issues identified on the work site and those that are not accounted for in blueprints and drawings.

• Monitors the work of employees and outside contractors on electrical projects and ensures the work product is tested, commissioned, and meets current electrical codes.

• Diagnoses and troubleshoots electrical issues with hardware components in the equipment controlled by building automation system software to include lighting, alarms, camera, environmental monitoring, phone, and data systems.

• Works with Building Automation System Technicians, other trades employees, or outside vendor contractors to review performance and troubleshoot issues with equipment controlled by automation system software.

• Monitors, guides, and instructs employees engaged in resolving complex or unique repair and installation issues.

• Updates and maintains technical and archival drawings or records based on construction, installation, and repair alterations to ensure accuracy.

• Identifies training needs of lower-level Electricians and other employees based on inspection of work and observation of work methods.

• Oversees the work performed by Electrician Trainees, ensuring skills and techniques are demonstrated for completion of training assignments.

• Participates in the training or retraining of employees related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, fixtures, and components.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks and may perform lower-level Electrician duties consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trades.

• Knowledge of electrical codes and regulations relevant to electrical systems, components, and equipment that operate with up to 480 volts of electricity.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools for testing, installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems, fixtures, and components that operate with up to 480 volts of electricity.

• Knowledge of the electronic components of digitally controlled equipment, including controllers, sensors, and wiring.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to locate and repair electrical defects in equipment operating with up to 480 volts of electricity.

• Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical blueprints, manufacturers’ manuals, and schematics to the selection of electrical components and the work lay out for a project.

• Ability to read and interpret electrical measuring devices.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Six years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems, components, and equipment, including two years performing skilled electrical installation and repair work in commercial, industrial, or multi-unit residential structures;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes two years performing skilled electrical installation and repair work in commercial, industrial, or multi-unit residential structures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of a valid license as a journey-level or master-level electrician issued by the local Pennsylvania jurisdiction.

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
