MEDIUM VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN

DEFINITION: This is specialized electrical work in the operation, maintenance and repair of medium voltage electrical systems and equipment.

An employee in this job performs a variety of skilled duties operating and maintaining electrical power distribution systems and associated equipment with a voltage above 480 volts and below 23,000 volts. Work involves installing and maintaining transformers, switchgears, and emergency standby generators; repairing and replacing underground cables; identifying and troubleshooting problem areas; and installing, testing, and maintaining electrical machinery, devices and associated equipment. Work may also include operating and maintaining a medium voltage electrical substation. Positions in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are also responsible for installing, maintaining and testing truck height-sensing equipment; and installing and maintaining highway and sign lighting over limited access highways. Work is performed independently within procedural and safety guidelines and requirements. Work is reviewed by a Medium Voltage Electrician Foreman or an administrative or maintenance supervisor for adherence to standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Cleans, tests, adjusts, repairs and replaces electrical control equipment such as air and oil circuit breakers, switchgears, transformers, cables, generators, synchronous motors and other electrical equipment.

Maintains effective operation of generators, synchronous motors, and motor generators using electrical and mechanical tools and testing instruments.

Makes emergency cutouts using switchgear in the event of breakdowns or for necessary repairs.

Operates a medium voltage substation utilizing status board, relays, switches and breakers.

Checks and interprets substation instrument readings and takes corrective action as necessary.

Monitors power distribution switchboards.

Prepares and interprets logs and reports reflecting power production, consumption, and operating conditions.

Adheres to applicable safety rules, precautions and procedures while working on “hot” electrical systems including the use of appropriate safety equipment.

Installs, troubleshoots and maintains airport runway lighting systems.

Changes, connects, disconnects, parallels or affects substitutions for electrical equipment and conductors, using the switchgear mode of operation.

Reads blueprints to trace routing of electrical cables.

Reads schematic diagrams to determine and resolve electrical system problems.

Selects and uses the appropriate splice kit and tape for line repair.

Inspects and maintains tunnel carbon-monoxide analyzing and recording equipment.

Inspects and maintains ventilating fans, fire alarm systems, truck over height alarms, traffic control lights, and tunnel lighting systems.

Complies with legal, procedural, safety and recordkeeping requirements for electrical work.

Operates a lift truck or bucket lift truck to make electrical repairs on highway and sign lighting.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity associated with medium voltage equipment.

Knowledge of the maintenance, operation and repair of electrical devices and equipment.

Knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials of the electrical trade.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards, required safety precautions, and legal requirements involved with electrical work.

Knowledge of standard tools, safety equipment, and testing devices used in electrical work.

Ability to read and interpret codes, regulations and standards applicable to electrical work.

Ability to read and interpret electrical measuring devices.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams.

Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Five years of journey-level experience in the electrical trade;

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions in this job require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.

POST EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT: Certain positions in this job are required to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License within one year from date of hire.
