MEDIUM VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN FOREMAN

DEFINITION: This is specialized work involving the supervision of Medium Voltage Electricians.

An employee in this job supervises Medium Voltage Electricians and participates in a variety of skilled duties involving the operation and maintenance of electrical power distribution systems and associated equipment with a voltage above 480 volts and below 23,000 volts. Work involves planning, assigning, reviewing and participating in the maintenance, repair and replacement of electrical machinery, devices and equipment. Work may also include supervising and participating in the operation and maintenance of a medium voltage electrical substation. In addition to supervising Medium Voltage Electricians, an employee in this job may also supervise Electricians and other maintenance staff. Work is performed independently within procedural and safety guidelines and requirements. Work is reviewed by a maintenance manager for adherence to standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and participates in preventive maintenance, inspection, testing, repair and replacement of electrical equipment and devices, such as switchgears, transformers, generators, lighting, underground cables, traffic control devices, and carbon monoxide analyzing systems.

Supervises and participates in the operation of a medium voltage substation.

Sets up maintenance schedules and ensures that proper maintenance is performed.

Reads blueprints, sketches, and drawings in order to plan the material and labor needed to accomplish tasks.

Reads schematic diagrams to determine and resolve electrical system problems, such as short circuits, power outages and equipment failures.

Complies with legal, procedural, safety and recordkeeping requirements for electrical work.

Maintains records of repairs, maintenance services, and materials inventory.

Operates a lift truck or bucket lift truck to make electrical repairs on highway and sign lighting.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

An employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity associated with medium voltage equipment.

Knowledge of the maintenance, operation and repair of electrical devices and equipment.

Knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials of the electrical trade.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards, required safety precautions, and legal requirements involved with electrical work.

Knowledge of standard tools, safety equipment, and testing devices used in electrical work.

Ability to read and interpret codes, regulations and standards applicable to electrical work.

Ability to read and interpret electrical measuring devices.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams.

Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a Medium Voltage Electrician;

                                                                                                                                                             or

Six years of journey-level experience in the electrical trade, including one year of experience in medium voltage electrical work;

                                                                                                                                                             or

An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of experience in medium voltage electrical work.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions in this job require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.

POST EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT: Certain positions in this job are required to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License within one year from date of hire.
