SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Painter series describes work in the preparation, painting, coating, and finishing of surfaces.

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the preparation, painting, coating, and finishing of a variety of surfaces.

An employee in this job applies primers, paints, stains, varnishes, wallpaper, and related products to interior and exterior surfaces using a variety of tools and techniques. Work involves cleaning, patching, and preparing surfaces; determining required materials and quantities of paint, coating, and finish; and maintaining documentation of the materials used. Work may include assigning and demonstrating painting related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of specific work assignments. Work is performed independently and is checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Cleans, patches, and prepares a variety of surfaces, such as buildings, walls, structures, furniture, and machinery.

• Prepares surfaces by dissolving, stripping, scraping, burning, brushing, and sanding them using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, and vacuum sanders.

• Performs patching repairs to surfaces using spackle, plaster, caulk, putty, and other appropriate materials.

• Applies a variety of products, to include water- or oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, primers, epoxies, shellacs, urethanes, glazes, and related products to interior and exterior surfaces.

• Applies materials using a variety of tools and equipment, such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, spraying booths, and line painters.

• Measures surface areas and recommends the kind, quantity, and quality of paint and other materials to be used.

• Cuts to size, aligns, and applies wallpaper, canvas, and other wall coverings.

• Researches the use and application of new products and identifies coatings appropriate for unique surfaces.

• Selects or mixes products to produce desired color, gloss, or surface effect; and maintains product documentation in tracking systems.

• Cleans surfaces with chemicals, caustic removers, and other specialty cleaners.

• Tapes, spackles, sands, and finishes drywall.

• Prepares and paints curbs and parking areas.

• Hauls and erects ladders and scaffolding when working at heights.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance employees on painting-related tasks.

• Follows Safety Data Sheets for the proper application and disposal of products.

• Complies with safety standards for work assignments, including protecting surrounding areas and surfaces from paint splatter and wearing personal protective equipment.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the painting trade.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools essential to the painting trade.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to measure and calculate square footage for estimating necessary materials.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title);

or

• Three years of experience in the painting trade;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of a motor vehicle license.
