MAINTENANCE REPAIRMAN 1

DEFINITION: This is semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in the building, mechanical or electrical trades.

An employee in this class works in a variety of trades at the sub-journey level in the maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment. Work involves minor repair jobs of a routine nature, which are carried out with only general supervision, or more advanced work assisting a journey level skilled tradesman or foreman in regular trades maintenance jobs. Supervision is received from a maintenance supervisor who assigns work, inspects work in progress, reviews reports, and inspects work upon completion.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Opens blocked drains; repairs leaky faucets; helps steamfitter to couple or disconnect pipe; and cuts and threads pipe.

Replaces bulbs, shades, switches; helps electrician in major electrical maintenance and repair; and oils, adjusts and cares for electrical motors.

Builds doors; lays linoleum; makes repairs to floors; takes out and replaces screens and repairs screens as needed; replaces broken windows, and sash weights; and repairs door checks and locks.

Makes minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment and oils and cleans machinery as necessary.

Mixes cement and plaster; helps to lay blocks, bricks and pour cement forms; and makes minor plastering repairs.

Paints buildings, rooms, walls or other surfaces as assigned.

Cuts grass using lawn care equipment.

Removes snow from sidewalks and parking lots using basic snow removal equipment.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.

Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades involved.

Ability to perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to operate and/or utilize basic lawn care and snow removal equipment.

Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Some agencies may require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.
