VECTOR CONTROL SPECIALIST

DEFINITION: This is skilled and technical work in the field of vector control.

An employee in this class follows standard practices to control and eliminate vector problems in state facilities. Work involves the use of chemicals, fogging machines, traps, and commercial devices designed to eradicate vermin and pest infestations. Assignments usually follow a set routine, although specific instructions may be received from an administrative superior for special tasks. Work is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor for effectiveness in safely reducing and controlling the vector population, by inspections and conferences with the employee.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Conducts inspections of state facilities to determine location of vermin infestation.

Inspects garbage and trash disposal areas for regular removal and sanitary storage of wastes.

Steams drainage grids, screens, and garbage and other disposal receptacles to prevent, reduce or eliminate vector infestation.

Applies pesticides and installs devices to control and reduce areas of vector infestation.

Sprays wards and geriatric areas for common and persistent institutional carriers.

Maintains custody of the chemicals, sprays and equipment and insures safe usage, storage and disposal procedures are followed.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of high school level biology as it pertains to animal and insect pests.

Ability to learn the sources and causes of vector infestation.

Ability to learn first aid and other procedures to be followed in case of a pesticide accident.

Ability to learn the potential hazards of toxic chemical pesticides traps, and other vector control equipment; and the safety precautions required to minimize these hazards.

Ability to develop skill in the detection, extermination, and suppression of insects, rodents, birds, or other pests.

Ability to develop skill in interpreting pesticide label directions and related literature.

Ability to develop skill in formulating and applying proper concentrations of pesticides to be used as circumstances warrant.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic computation.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current certificate for Pesticide Applications as issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for, industrial, institutional, structural and public health related pest control; or the ability to obtain this certificate within six months of the date of hire.
