VECTOR CONTROL SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is technical work supervising the vector control activities in state facilities and grounds.

An employee in this class is responsible for directing the identification of sources of vector breeding, and planning, initiating, and implementing methods of vector control. Methods of vector control may be discussed with an administrative superior or sanitarian. Supervision is exercised over employees assigned vector control duties. Work is performed independently and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor for effectiveness in safely reducing and controlling the vector population.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, organizes, assigns, and directs the work of vector control specialists involved in eliminating animal pests from state facilities.
 
Schedules areas, wards, buildings and grounds for periodic and systematic inspection and treatment.

Supervises the inspection of the institutional environment for vermin and pests.

Insures that safety precautions are adhered to in applying pesticides and in the placing of mechanical traps within the institution.

Maintains records of areas treated, employees time and materials used and prepares reports of completed assignments.

Initiates corrective disciplinary action for minor misconduct by employees and recommends major corrective disciplinary actions or dismissals.

Receives grievances and complaints, conducts initial investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee, and resolves or recommends resolution to complaints or grievances.

Prepares and signs employee performance evaluation reports; or reviews employee work performance and recommends employee evaluations which have a direct impact on formal work appraisals.

Requisitions chemicals, supplies, and safety equipment, subject to administrative approval.

Maintains custody of the chemicals, sprays and equipment and insures safe usage, storage and disposal procedures are followed.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the sources and causes of vector infestation.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of basic supervision.

Knowledge of the potential hazards of toxic chemical pesticides, traps, and other vector control equipment; and of the safety precautions required to minimize these hazards.

Knowledge of first aid and other procedures to be followed in case of pesticide accident.

Skill in the detection, extermination, and suppression of insects, rodents, birds, or other pests.

Skill in interpreting pesticide label directions and related literature.

Skill in formulating and apply proper concentrations of pesticides to be used as circumstances warrant.

Ability to plan, assign, instruct, review and evaluate the work of a group of employees performing vector control work.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to supervise and effectively accomplish work through subordinates.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience as a Vector Control Specialist 1;

                                                                                                                                                       or

Three years of experience in vector control work and graduation from high school;

                                                                                                                                                      or

Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the Required Knowledge’s, Skills, and Abilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current certificate for Pesticide Applicators as issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for industrial, institutional, structural and public health related pest control.
