BARBER 1

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation of a barber shop in a state facility.

An employee in this class is responsible for shaving and cutting hair of a large number of assigned patients/residents. Supervision is received from a higher level barber or cosmetologist or from medical, nursing, or other supervisory personnel, but employees are independently responsible for applying standard trade practices to the work and for adherence to a prescribed work schedule. Work is subject to inspection by the State Board of Barber Examiners for conformance to state laws and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Works in the hospital or center barber shop providing hair and scalp treatments; styles and cuts hair and shaves patients/residents.

Coordinates appointments for patients/residents barbering services consistent with patients/residents health care and treatment programming schedules, and the movement of patients/residents to and from the barber shop.

Visits wards to provide barbering services for patients/residents who are too ill to be taken to the barber shop.

Shaves patients according to specific instruction from medical and nursing personnel for pre-operative purposes.

Reports patients/residents scalp conditions that require further medical and/or hygienic monitoring, such as head lice, psoriasis, ringworm and others.

Sterilizes all equipment used; maintains proper standards of sanitation; and maintains tools and equipment in good working conditions.

Counts tools regularly to ensure the security of supplies and equipment and to prevent retention by patients/residents.

Maintains inventory and requisitions supplies when necessary.

Participates in periodic training and instructional classes to update and maintain current in barbering techniques.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the modern barbering techniques, methods, and practices.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, sanitation and sterilization requirements of barber tools and equipment.

Knowledge of inventory control and shelf life expectancies of barber shop supplies, tools and equipment.

Knowledge of first-aid methods and procedures.

Skill in the care and use of barbering tools, such as scissors, combs, razors, electric and hand operated hair clippers, hand vibrators, shaving creams, lotions, gels, sharpening devices and others.

Skill in the application of the various barbering services.

Ability to adhere to state, departmental and facility regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to barbering services and to provide the various types of barbering services.

Ability to physically position patients/residents to perform barbering services.

Ability to perform work on schedule and in accordance with specific instruction.

Ability to work with and maintain a sympathetic attitude towards mentally or physically ill patients/residents who, at times, do not cooperate or are abusive.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a license as a Barber as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barbers Examiners.
