MEDIA SPECIALIST

DEFINITION: This is professional work directing an audio-visual communications program in a state institution.

An employee in this class is responsible for directing an audio-visual communications program used to achieve specialized project objectives in a state institution. Work involves planning and directing the use of a variety of communications modalities including closed circuit television, cinematography, photography or specialized audio recording systems to supplement or improve the instructional programs and/or medical diagnostic and therapeutic efforts in a state institution. Work involves meeting with program personnel to discuss and determine program objectives and the appropriate audio-visual modality or techniques necessary to achieve the desired result. Supervision may be exercised over a small staff of technical and clerical employees. Work is performed with considerable independence in all technical aspects of the program and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through an evaluation of results for program effectiveness and adherence to departmental policies.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Plans, organizes, and directs an audio-visual communications program in a state institution by utilizing modalities such as closed circuit television, cinematography, photography or specialized audio recording systems.

Confers with program personnel to discuss and determine program objectives and the appropriate audio-visual modality or techniques necessary to achieve the desired results.

Participates in planning and making video tapes for closed circuit television, including script, camera, sound or editing work.

Instructs and supervises employees, residents, or assistants in the use of audio-visual equipment.

Advises and assists staff members in the techniques of using audio-visual equipment, in taping individual or group psychotherapy sessions, classroom instruction, experiments, and/or model demonstrations.

Compiles and maintains a video tape library; tapes programs presented by professional guest speakers.

Produces still photographs, slides, charts and overhead transparencies and accompanying art work.

Sets up, operates and maintains projection, sound recording, and reproducing equipment.

Develops specifications for and orders audio-visual equipment and material.

Performs or directs the maintenance, repair, cleaning, storing and adjusting of equipment.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the equipment, methods, techniques, and materials used in making video tapes for closed circuit television, in photography and processing, and in motion picture production.

Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of projection, audio and video recording and reproducing equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustrations, mechanical or freehand lettering, layout, design, and format for publications.

Considerable knowledge of modern audio-visual equipment and material available for purchase.

Knowledge of the uses of audio-visual communications systems and facilities in mental health treatment programs, and/or instructional programs.

Ability to confer with program personnel in determining project objectives.

Ability to determine the most appropriate methods and audio-visual modality to achieve program objectives.

Ability to instruct and supervise employees, residents or assistants in the use of audio-visual equipment.

Ability to make minor repairs on all audio-visual equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional and non-professional personnel.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Four years of experience in audio-visual communications, including closed circuit television, cinematography, photography and processing.

A Bachelor's Degree in communications, journalism or a closely related field with major course work in radio, television and film.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
