DIGITAL PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

DEFINITION: This is technical and creative work assisting with the production of multimedia projects within the Bureau of Commonwealth Media Services, Department of General Services.

An employee in this job is responsible for assisting higher level staff with the production of video, audio, multimedia or digital photographic projects used for broadcast, public information and education, training, documentaries, in-house communications, and research and promotional purposes. Work involves the setup of news events and video productions including lighting, audio and video production equipment, teleprompters, props and other related equipment; assisting staff with the operation of professional broadcast-quality video and audio equipment and digital editing and multimedia post-production equipment and software; assisting with the preparation of materials for use in professional digital video editing systems; and assisting in providing digital photographic coverage for highly visible news conferences and events. Work also includes conducting detailed research of program topic areas in support of the visual treatment and audio-visual script; and assisting in the planning and coordination for the production, post-production, and duplication phases of the video, audio, or multimedia production. Work includes performing creative and technical work under close supervision. An employee in this job must use discretion in the presentation of information because of the potential for adversely affecting the programs and objectives of the Governor and other Administration officials. Work requires the highest confidentiality standards because of the access to sensitive and confidential information afforded incumbents in this job. Assignments are received from a Section Chief or other technical or professional supervisor and work is reviewed for timeliness of final product, adherence to established standards, and customer satisfaction.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates, under supervision, broadcast-quality digital video and photographic cameras, video and audio recorders, lighting equipment, microphones, digital switchers and mixers, teleprompters and other related photographic and television production equipment.

Assists with the research, writing, planning and coordination of video, audio and multimedia projects used for public information, public affairs, documentaries, and training for Commonwealth agencies and work involving the Governor and Lt. Governor, Cabinet officials and other high-ranking officials.

Assists with provision of digital photographic coverage and technical support for news conferences and events using professional digital cameras, lighting, and other related photographic equipment.

Assists professional staff with preparation of materials for use in professional digital video editing systems using multiple video and audio sources.

Assists with the operation of broadcast-quality digital editing and multimedia post-production equipment and software.

Assists with digital still image scanning, processing, editing, retouching, layout and design for photographic printing, marketing, and packaging.

Inputs and retrieves digital multimedia assets from databases for use in video, audio, multimedia, and photographic projects.

Searches databases and converts images and data to various file formats.

Digitally encodes various types of multimedia assets for use in multimedia and video projects.

Searches assets stored in the Digital Asset Management System and transcodes or duplicates the files.

Travels to various locations to carryout assignments.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

May participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the techniques and principles of professional video, audio, multimedia, and digital photographic production.

Knowledge of professional video, audio, multimedia, and digital photographic equipment and software and the use of this equipment.

Knowledge of communication principles and practices.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor’s degree in communications media or in a closely related field;
