PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES SUPERVISOR, DGS

DEFINITION: This is responsible, professional and creative supervisory work overseeing the photographic and still imaging phases of projects in the Bureau of Commonwealth Media Services, Department of General Services.

The employee in this job is responsible for directing, through supervision of a staff of digital photographic specialists, the provision of statewide digital photographic coverage and technical support for highly visible news conferences and other events. Work includes meeting with clients to determine project objectives; providing creative and technical guidance to clients and subordinate staff; preparing project budget estimates; reviewing work products for quality control purposes and to ensure project objectives have been met; and reviewing records of production expenses, materials, time, and contract costs for accuracy. Work is developed to effectively and sensitively portray the Governor’s initiatives and objectives and is produced for use by the Governor and Lt. Governors’ Offices, Commonwealth agencies, and the media. Work is reviewed by the Assistant Director, Commonwealth Media Services for program effectiveness, adherence to departmental policies and procedures, and customer satisfaction.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Directs, plans, and supervises the production of photographs, images, and displays for news conferences, public information materials, websites, official portraits, and training.

Directs digital photographic coverage of highly visible, confidential and sensitive events for the Commonwealth.

Provides creative and technical guidance and direction to a staff of photographic and still imaging specialists.

Meets with clients to determine project objectives and methods for digital photographic projects.

Resolves conflicts and problems to ensure project objectives are met.

Prepares budget estimates and monitors and reviews records of project expenses, materials, time and contract costs.

Schedules and assigns production time for studio portraits, location shooting, and digital image editing.

Ensures personnel, equipment and props are secured within a time frame acceptable to client needs and oversees related staff during all stages of development.

Ensures the proper storage and retrieval of digital images.

Oversees the purchase of equipment for photographic projects.

Travels to various locations to carryout assignments.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

The employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of digital photography and multimedia production.

Knowledge of professional digital photographic and multimedia equipment and software.

Knowledge of communications principles and practices.

Knowledge of creative and technical decisions involved in the production of digital photographic images, displays, graphics, and multimedia projects.

Ability to analyze and interpret policies and procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a Digital Photographic Specialist 2;

                                                                                                                                                            or

Four years of professional digital photography experience, and a bachelor’s degree in digital photography, communications, journalism or a related field;

                                                                                                                                                            or

An equivalent combination of experience and training.
