MICROGRAPHICS TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is technical production work in a centralized microform production center serving most Commonwealth agencies.

An employee in this class operates a variety of specialized equipment used in microform production from hard copy, computer tapes and reproduction of film masters. Work involves the full range of microform production operation to include job specific computer programming and operation, camera operation, film development, etc. Assigned duties are performed independently with guidance provided in unusual or complex situations. Work is reviewed through spot checks or reports and work completed for technical proficiency, acceptable production quality and quantity, record keeping and adherence to instructions and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Writes and selects existing programs using a mixture of computer languages for a Computer Output Microfiche computer to translate information from disk or tape to microform in the specified format.

Adjusts focal length, illumination, temperatures and feed rate and mixes prescribed chemical ratios as required in the operation of microform equipment.

Maintains production logs and reports orally or in writing on film and chemical usage, production problems, machine malfunctions and shift output.

Prepares materials for processing, including removing staples, mending torn pages, labeling materials, mounting computer disks and tapes and related functions.

Performs assigned preventive maintenance, cleans work area, loads and unloads documents from trucks and picks up and delivers source material and completed production as assigned.

Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of principles and practices of computer programming and photography as applied to microform production.

Ability to learn to program and operate all equipment in a centralized microform production center to include operating adjustments to maintain proper film feed, image focus, illumination and chemical flow to produce a quality, readable product.

Ability to learn to identify causes of equipment malfunctions and to make minor repairs.

Ability to prepare written production activity reports.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and procedures in both oral and written form, particularly in the safe and proper  operation of equipment.

Ability to stand for long periods and lift boxes of paper, documents and supplies.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of computer programming and operation;

One year of microform production including at least three months experience in programming Computer Output Microfiche equipment. Formal classroom or vocational training in computer programming and operation or Computer Output Microfiche operation may be substituted for experience.
