DUPLICATING MANAGER 1
DEFINITION: This is managerial work in the duplication of graphic arts material in a full-service duplication shop.
An employee in this class directs the activities and operation of a full-service duplication shop. A full-service duplication shop is characterized by the range of services offered which include negative and platemaking, skilled offset work, bindery work, composition work and may include forms design work. Work includes planning and assigning work, determining work priorities, reviewing work performance and evaluating the work performance of a group of employees engaged in platemaking, offset press work, bindery work and/or forms design work. Work also includes determining the best method of duplication, which operator and presses are best suited to each job and making recommendations on the acquisition of equipment. Work is performed with considerable independence in determining the duplication processes and procedures to be used but is reviewed upon completion by a technical or administrative superior for quality and adherence to work specifications and orders.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Directs, through subordinate supervisors, employees engaged in mat making, platemaking, offset press work, bindery services and composition work.
Plans and organizes work, assigns work, determines work priority, sets goals, reviews work performance and evaluates employee work performance.
Interviews prospective employees and recommends employee selection or ranks applicants in terms of preferability for employment.
Receives grievances and complaints, conducts investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee and resolves or recommends solutions to grievances or complaints.
Receives, reviews, and approves or disapproves requests for leave.
Trains new employees in the proper operation and maintenance of the machines used in a full-service duplication shop.
Reviews duplication requests and determines most appropriate method of duplication.
Advises agency on methods of improving forms and other similar material.
Reviews new equipment and recommends purchase of new equipment.
Maintains machines in operating condition by insuring that they are cleaned and lubricated, and that minor repairs and adjustments are made.
Maintains and adequate supply of materials needed to operate the shop and initiates orders to replenish stock.
Maintains records on the shop operation and production and prepares reports as necessary.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of cameras, platemakers, lithographic presses, graphic art equipment, and composition equipment.
Knowledge of the uses and applications of the papers, inks, fluids and chemicals used in camera and offset work.
Knowledge of the operation maintenance, application, and uses of bindery and composition equipment.
Knowledge of the principles of art and copy preparation for offset production.
Ability to plan, organize, assign and evaluate the work of subordinates.
Ability to train subordinates in proper machine operation and maintenance.
Ability to supervise subordinates effectively.
Ability to read and interpret departmental regulations and bargaining unit contracts applicable to the organizational unit.
Ability to apply the principles and practices of safety applicable to the work performed by the unit.
Ability to operate and maintain machines.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Duplicating Supervisor; or four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of duplicating machines including two years in skilled operation of a lithographic press or mat process camera and one year of supervisory experience; or any combination of experience and training.
