ARTIST ILLUSTRATOR 2

DEFINITION: This is highly skilled work in the preparation of a variety of art projects.

An employee in this class uses many different art media to prepare a wide variety of art work to promote such agency programs as training, education, recruitment, or publicity. Work involves rendering complex illustrations, mechanical or freehand lettering, layout, design, and format for publications, posters, flyers, charts and graphs, and other visual aid materials, preparing floor plans for state office buildings, planning and designing displays for seminars, conferences, or conventions, retouching photographs, and laying out forms. Work includes meeting with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designated project methods, and assure desired results. Employees receive assignments from an administrative or technical superior or program personnel in the form of rough draft or verbal instructions. Employees work with a great deal of independence, and use own ideas and program knowledge to prepare the requested work. Supervision is received from an administrative or technical superior who assigns work and reviews results for adherence to established objectives.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Renders complex illustrations, mechanical or freehand lettering, layout, design, and format for publications, posters, flyers, displays, and other visual aid materials.

Prepares charts and graphs to be included in various statistical reports.

Analyzes copy and makes layouts of office forms for departmental use.

Uses pen and ink, pencil, airbrush and other graphic arts media to illustrate projects, draw in lines for forms, and do the layout for publications.

Retouches photographs to be used in small publications, displays, and other visual aid materials.

Designs and makes displays for seminars, conferences, conventions, or advertisement.

Conducts research for information to be used either for art work or for charts and graphs.

Meets with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designate project methods, and assure desired results.

Reproduces basic floor plans for state office buildings from an architectural drawings.

Selects the type of font to be used in publications.

Operates lettering devices to prepare headings in large or unusual type.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration and typographic design.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operations used in the preparation of copy for publication and exhibition.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operations used to produce the desired visual effect and to conform with the specialized printing method.

Considerable knowledge of the departmental organization and programs.

Skill in the use of tools used in illustrations, layout, and design work.

Ability to create effective and artistic formats publications.

Ability to illustrate text matter with appropriate drawings, sketches, and graphs.

Ability to design effective forms, charts, and graphs.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years as an Artist Illustrator I;

                                                                                                                                                          or

three years of progressively responsible art experience, including illustration preparation and general display and exhibits work; and two years of formal training in fine arts or design.

Appropriate art experience may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.
