ARTIST ILLUSTRATOR 3

DEFINITION: This is highly skilled and supervisory work in the preparation of a variety of art projects.

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating the graphic arts programs in a state agency. Work involves supervising technical and clerical subordinates in the use of different art media to prepare art work to promote such agency programs as training, education, recruitment, or publicity. Work includes meeting with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, and applying graphic arts skills and imagination in suggesting methods, materials, or visual aids in attaining program goals. Work is performed with a high degree in independence on all technical aspects of the program, and is reviewed by an administrative superior who evaluates program results for effectiveness and adherence to departmental policies.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of lower level technical and clerical personnel.

Confers with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designate project methods, and assure desired results.

Participates in training new employees.

Renders complex illustrations, mechanical or freehand lettering, layout, design, and format for publications, posters, flyers, displays, and other visual aid materials.

Prepares charts and graphs to portray various statistical matter.

Analyzes copy and makes layouts of office forms for departmental use.

Uses pen and ink, pencil, airbrush and other graphic arts media to illustrate projects, draw in lines for forms, and do the layout for publications.

Retouches photographs to be used in publications, displays, and other visual aid materials.

Designs and makes displays for seminars, conferences, conventions, or advertisements.

Conducts research for information to be used either for art or for charts and graphs.

Meets with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designate project methods, and assure desired results.

Reproduces basic floor plans for state office buildings from an architectural drawing.

Selects the type font to be used in publications.

Operates lettering devices to prepare headings in large or unusual types.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration and typographic design.

Extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operations involved in the preparation of copy for publication and exhibition.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operations used to produce the desired visual effect and to conform with the specified printing method.

Thorough knowledge of the departmental organization and programs.

Skill in the use of tools used in illustration, layout, and design work.

Ability to plan, supervise, and train technical and clerical subordinates.

Ability to create effective and artistic formats for publications.

Ability to illustrate test matter with appropriate drawings, sketches, and graphs.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, departmental officials. and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as an Artist Illustrator 2,

four years of progressively responsible art experience, including illustration preparation and general display and exhibits work;

and two years of formal training in fine arts or design.

Appropriate art experience may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required experience.
