FORMS LAYOUT SPECIALIST 3

DEFINITION: This is specialized and supervisory work in the layout of forms and paste-ups for pamphlets and similar materials.

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising an design unit in the preparation of the final layout of forms and paste-ups, for pamphlets and similar materials. Work involves supervising the design of format, measuring of layout, fitting and pasting-up of copy, and preparation of material for pamphlets and similar materials, laying out signs, posters, or flyers, or preparing graphs or charts from statistical figures. Employees meet with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designate project methods, and assure desired results. Employees receive work from an administrative superior or program personnel in the form of rough drafts or verbal instructions. Work is performed with considerable independence, and is reviewed by an administrative superior for adherence to established objectives.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Supervises and plans the work of technical and clerical personnel engaged in the preparation of the paste-up for pamphlets and similar materials, and the layouts for posters, signs, maps, graphic charts, letters, and reports.

Confers with program personnel to discuss and determine project objectives, designate project methods, and assure desired results.

Participates in training new employees in the proper methods to use for forms design and layout, and pamphlets and similar materials.

Analyzes copy for effectiveness and prepares final layout of office forms for departmental use.

Conducts research for information to be produced in chart or graphic form.

Supervises preparation of material for duplication.

Uses pen and ink, or pencil to draw in the lines for forms; graphic charts, signs, posters, and the outline layout for pamphlets and similar materials.

Specifies typographic arrangement of the copy for forms and pamphlets and similar materials.

Selects the type font used on the forms for pamphlets and similar materials.

Operates lettering devices to prepare headings in large or unusual type.

Reproduces basic floor plans for state office buildings from an architectural drawing.

Prepares materials for duplication.

Maintains a file of form masters for reference purposes.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of Business English, spelling, and arithmetic.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of forms designs and publication paste-up.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operations involved in the preparation of copy for duplication.

Knowledge of departmental organization and programs.

Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials used in publication paste-up or forms layout work.

Ability to prepare and design the layout for charts, and office forms.

Ability to prepare the paste-up for pamphlets and similar materials.

Ability to plan, supervise, and train technical and clerical personnel.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years as a Forms Layout Specialist II, or six years of progressively responsible clerical experience including one year in a supervisory capacity and two years of forms layout and publication paste-up work; and graduation from high school or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
