JOB TITLE: HVAC REFRIGERATION SPECIALIST

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The HVAC Refrigeration series describes work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems, units, equipment, and peripherals.

DEFINITION: This is specialized work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems, units, equipment, and peripheral devices.

An employee in this job analyzes, diagnoses, and repairs integrated commercial or industrial HVAC systems that are campus-wide or multi-facility in scope. Work includes planning and executing the installation and balancing of new and renovated HVAC commercial or industrial systems; monitoring, assessing, and adjusting the mechanical performance of the system through the building automation (BA) system; and coordinating, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing the work of trades and maintenance employees involved in HVAC and refrigeration repair and installation projects. Work also includes planning, delivering, or coordinating the mechanical and technical training of lower-level staff; and ensuring equipment knowledge transfer to mechanical staff from contractors or manufacturers after new equipment installations. Work is performed independently and reviewed by a supervisor through inspections, system performance evaluations, discussions, and reports.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

     • Work is differentiated from the lower level job based on responsibility for analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing complex HVAC systems that are integrated and support multiple commercial or industrial facilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.)

• Troubleshoots, repairs, re-assembles, and tests mechanical commercial or industrial HVAC equipment, such as chillers or high-pressure boilers, in centralized systems supporting multiple facilities.

• Monitors, assesses, and adjusts the performance and efficiency of the HVAC systems through the BAS by reviewing trends, sequence of operations, and reports; and through regular consultation with the BAS technicians.

• Estimates time, materials, equipment, and staff required to complete a variety of installation, repair, and replacement projects.

• Plans and executes the integration of new HVAC or refrigeration equipment, components, and controls into a centralized system.

• Installs, repairs, and maintains diverse HVAC systems and units powered by natural gas, electricity, or oil that perform a variety of heating and air conditioning functions.

• Installs, repairs, and maintains HVAC systems supporting highly controlled environments such as laboratories or data centers.

• Oversees the work of trades and maintenance employees, and outside contractors on HVAC, refrigeration, and BAS repair and installation projects.

• Monitors, advises, and instructs HVAC Refrigeration Technicians during highly complex or unique repair and installation issues.

• Analyzes building environmental control problems, such as temperature, humidity, static pressure, air flows, noise, and air quality, and recommends solutions.

• Researches and provides recommendations on new HVAC or refrigeration systems based on needs assessment of building use, environmental issues, and budget.

• Assesses and recommends mechanical and technical training for mechanical staff within an organization or agency.

• Assists with the development and delivery of classroom training or instructional materials on mechanical equipment and related topics.

• Coordinates the training and knowledge transfer between manufacturer or contractor and mechanical staff for newly installed equipment; evaluates mechanical staff on material learned; and retrains if necessary.

• Provides mechanical expertise and facilities knowledge to engineers and architects to scope projects and resolve design issues.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration, such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, and the use of refrigerant tables.

• Knowledge of air distribution and ductwork design and construction, to include fan construction, curves, and laws; air filters and ratings; and control dampers, insulation, and related systems.

• Knowledge of pump components and functionality, including application of valves, vibration isolation, strainers, net-positive suction head, and total head as it relates to pump selection and sizing.

• Knowledge of piping techniques to include system components, valve types, and pipe schedules.

• Knowledge of the equipment, tools, and test instruments used for water treatment in mechanical systems.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to calculate airflow and assess pressure-temperature characteristics to locate and repair faulty equipment.

• Ability to diagnose pump failures and determine course of action to make repairs.

• Ability to extrapolate trend data and other metrics from BAS to aide in troubleshooting system failures and improve system efficiency and performance.

• Ability to read and interpret HVAC, architectural, plumbing, and electrical system blueprints and schematics.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Five years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems, units, and equipment including three years working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes three years working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• All employees must possess an active EPA Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification.

•Certain positions require an active motor vehicle license.
