FOSTER GRANDPARENT L0004

Definition: This is work in guiding and participating in activities of children with intellectual disabilities.

An employee in this class provides care and emotional support for children with intellectual disabilities to make it possible for the children to develop to the extent of their capacity and reduce the trend toward the development of emotional disturbance. Emphasis of the work is on individual attention, and simulates the care normally given by a grandparent to his grandchild. Initially, the work consists of a brief training period designed to provide the foster grandparent with practical clinical experience and an understanding of children with intellectual disabilities. Following the training period, the grandparent is assigned to a small number of children with intellectual disabilities in a state institution and participates in such activities as playing games, feeding, reading, walking and exploring, craft work, outdoor play, teaching simple tasks, and helping with washing and dressing. Supervision is received through individual and group conferences, participation in prescribed training programs, and observation.

Examples of Work: Plans and guides the children's activities of daily living such as dressing, washing, and eating.

Provides individualized care.

Provides guidance in activities such as craft work and outdoor play.

Teaches simple tasks.

Assists in physical therapy and speech therapy.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Ability to read and write English.

Ability to care for children with intellectual disabilities.

Sufficient physical stamina to work four hours a day.

Minimum Experience and Training: No previous experience or training required.

Necessary Special Requirement: Applicants must be 55 years of age or over.
