ACCOUNTANT II L0312
Definition: This is advanced professional accounting work in the classification, analysis, and reporting of financial data.
An employee in this class analyzes difficult financial transactions and prepares documentation, financial statements and reports to control and account for funds and to analyze and project financial data for a difficult program or fund, or a number of less complex related programs or funds. Employees perform a wide variety of professional accounting work, but some assignments require an emphasis upon a specific accounting specialty. Supervision may be exercised over a small professional or clerical staff. Work is performed within general policies and procedures and is subject to review by a professional superior.
Examples of Work Performed: Maintains or supervises the maintenance of accounting records.
Supervises the maintenance of expenditure and budgetary control accounts; takes trial balances and prepares financial reports.
Maintains general ledgers with subsidiary ledgers that conform to it.
Conducts internal and external audits of office or other accounting records.
Prepares reports of internal and external audits and submits recommendations for the improvement of accounting operations.
Prepares adjustment vouchers and verifies them for the correct application of accounting principles.
Prepares accounting reports and budgetary projections for program personnel and central accounting agencies.
Prepares or reviews trial balances and financial reports of business enterprises that are subject to state regulations.
Maintains and analyzes records of raw materials, labor, and overhead to determine cost per unit, and to determine the division of the cost of overhead between different industries or cost centers.
Analyzes inventory reports and develops standards to maintain inventories at the desired level.
Maintains inventory controls to maintain accurate records of materials in stock, in process, and finished products to determine cost and wastage.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of commonly-accepted accounting principles and procedures.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of auditing and cost accounting.
Some knowledge of the principles and practices of office management.
Ability to assemble, analyze, and prepare reports and statements of difficult financial data.
Ability to analyze and interpret accounting and cost accounting records.
Ability to apply accounting principles to the solution of a variety of accounting or fiscal problems.
Ability to train and supervise a professional and non-professional accounting staff.
Ability to develop and install modifications in established accounting systems, procedures, records, and controls.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Minimum Experience and Training: One year as an Accountant I;
or
Two years of professional accounting experience, and graduation from a four year college or university, including or supplemented by 15 credits in accounting.
*Four years of bookkeeping experience and 18 college credits in accounting may be substituted for college graduation.
