Definition: This is entry level technical work in the analysis of quantified and statistical data.

An employee in this class participates in the collection, classification, and analysis of quantified and statistical data in projects and special studies where the parameters and statistical techniques to be used have been determined. Work involves participating in the development of a study plan, assisting in determining data needs, assisting in determining statistical techniques to be applied, performing statistical analysis of data, and preparing portions of special reports or studies to facilitate decision making in the planning and evaluation of agency programs. Work is received in the form of detailed instructions and is reviewed in progress and upon completion by a higher level statistician or an administrative superior for appropriateness, accuracy of statistical technique, and the useability of reports prepared.

Examples of Work: Assists a higher level statistician or administrative superior in developing a project or study plan to collect, classify, and analyze data regarding an agency or state program.

Assists in determining which sampling techniques are applicable to the project or study including the determination of confidence limits.

Assists in the design of forms and questionnaires necessary to establish a data base and in the application and utilization of automatic data processing equipment for the collection, analysis and presentation of quantified data and statistics.

Assists in the definition of terms and codes to insure uniformity in data collection, analysis and presentation.

Analyzes data using statistical methods such as time series, frequency distributions, least squares, correlation and regression analysis and prepares reports to interpret the data, its significance, extensions and bias.

Prepares assigned portions of special narrative reports to explain data collected and analyzed in graphic, tabular, statistical and mathematical terms.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the theory and practices utilized in the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of quantified data and statistics.

Ability to learn the analytical, statistical and mathematical theories and methods applicable to planning and evaluating agency or state objectives, programs, or operations.

Ability to learn the applications and uses of automatic data processing equipment for data collection, analysis, and presentation.

Ability to express and interpret meaningful relationships, estimates, projections, and analysis in proper statistical or mathematical terms, formulas and symbols as well as in narrative, tabular or graphic form.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, administrators and personnel in other units and agencies.

Minimum Experience and Training: A bachelor's degree in statistics or mathematics, including or supplemented by completion of 12 semester hours of course work in statistical theory and methods or in courses placing major emphasis on the application of statistical methods to specific subject matter fields;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
