COMPUTER PROGRAMMER 1 L0435
Definition: This is beginning level technical electronic computer programming work.
An employee in this class reduces work flow charts, block diagrams, and other related information of limited scope and complexity into the basic logic of an electronic computer and translates these steps into specific machine instructions. Assignments include the coding of symbolic language onto work sheets for conversion to punched card code, the testing and debugging of programs to assure their intended effectiveness, and the complete documentation of fully operational programs. New projects are assigned in detail by a technical supervisor who provides assistance when needed and reviews completed programs of quality, technical development, and the proper utilization of established principles and practices.
Examples of Work: Logically analyzes run specifications by translating program functions of limited scope and complexity into block diagrams.
Codes block diagrams into symbolic language.
Records symbols onto work sheets for conversion to punched card code.
Selects input data which would verity a program's intended effectiveness.
Assists computer operators in testing and debugging programs by interpreting machine halts and correcting error conditions.
Prepares detailed documentation of fully operational programs of limited scope and complexity.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of electronic data processing techniques.
Knowledge of the principles of block diagraming.
Knowledge of the principles of symbolic coding.
Knowledge of basic algebra and the binary numbering system.
Ability to logically analyze run specifications for translation into machine acceptable language.
Ability to make technical block diagrams.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Acceptable level of general intelligence.
Minimum Experience and Training: Six months experience as a Computer Programming Trainee;
or
One year of experience in electronic computer programming; a minimum of 100 hours of formal training in electronic computer programming; and graduation from high school or certification of technical or academic training equivalent to high school graduation. Additional formal training in electronic computer programming may be substituted for experience at a rate of 25 hours for one month of experience to a maximum of six months.
