Definition:

This is limited technical electronic computer programming work.

An employee in this class reduces work flow charts, block diagrams, and other related information into the basic logic of a computer and translates these steps into specific machine instructions. Significant aspects of the work including conferring with superiors and searching manuals and other source materials to resolve program intent and output requirements; utilizing appropriate programming languages to develop machine instructions; and analyzing test runs to correct coded program and input data. New projects are assigned, in detail, by a technical supervisor who provides assistance when needed and reviews completed programs for accuracy of logic, workability, and economy of computer time.

Examples of Work:

Analyzes all or part of a work flow chart or diagram to develop a sequence of program steps.

Prepares input and output memory layouts and block diagrams to show the sequence of computations for the solution of business and statistical problems.

Uses COBOL or other similar programming languages to develop machine instructions.

Evaluates a coded program to ascertain if other combinations of instruction would achieve greater flexibility, better machine utilization, or more dependable results.

Observes or runs tests of a coded program on a computer using actual or sample input data; corrects program errors by such methods as altering program steps and sequence.

Assists in designing cards or forms to be used as output.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of electronic computer capabilities and programming techniques.

Knowledge of the principles of block diagramming.

Knowledge of basic algebra and binary mathematics.

Skill in the use of inductive and deductive reasoning.

Ability to analyze operations and to organize their component parts into a logical system.

Ability to develop general and detailed computer block diagrams.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Minimum Experience and Training:

One year of experience performing duties which are normally assigned to positions in the Computer Programmer 1 class;

or

Two years of experience in electronic computer programming; a minimum of 100 hours of formal training in electronic computer programming; and graduation from high school or certification of technical or academic training equivalent to high school graduation. Additional formal training in electronic computer programming may be substituted for experience at a rate of 25 hours for one month of experience to a maximum of 12 months.
