ACTIVITY ASSISTANT (Housing)
Definition:
This is non-professional work in tenant and/or child activities at housing authority.
An employe in this class conducts planned sessions of tenant or child activities in recreational or physical therapy for groups or individuals. Work involves providing guided leadership for the tenants and/or children and assisting and working with them in an assigned activity. Some independence is exercised in conducting the assigned activity sessions within the limits of established procedures, but decisions are restricted to those of an emergency nature only, and problems are referred to a supervisor for solution. Guidance and supervision are received from a supervisor who observes and reviews work in progress and upon completion for quality and achievement of program goals.
Examples of Work Performed:
Conducts planned sessions of child activities in recreational or physical therapy.
Uses techniques and makes detailed preparations for the various activities.
Assumes responsibility for a routine activity for selected tenants and/or children.
Attends in-service training and staff meetings.
Tells or reads stories; leads musical activities.
Participates in the housekeeping function in the activity area, including routine maintenance and repair work.
Cooperates with housing authority staff personnel in accordance with general instructions.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of preparation procedures for the various activities.
Skill appropriate to the assigned activity such as music, crafts, or reading.

Ability to learn the general principles and practices of recreational therapy and their application to tenant and/or child activities services.
Ability to establish and maintain communication with tenants and children and to recognize major needs and problems of tenants and/or children as individuals and groups.
Ability to provide leadership and assistance.
Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
Ability to deal with one’s own personal characteristics in a way that would not interfere with effective tenant or child relations.
Experience and Training:
One year of experience in organizing, conducting, or assisting in social or recreational services or activities in a community settingor
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
