ACTIVITIES SUPERVISOR (Housing)

 

Definition:

This is specialized educational and recreational work of a supervisory nature in children’s activities at a housing authority.

An employe in this class directs the activities of a center or program involved in recreational and educational activities for children and/or tenants of a housing authority. Work involves planning, supervision, and evaluation of the program; participating in the educational and recreational activities and overall responsibility for the day-to-day planning and operation of the program. Employes exercise supervision over Activity Assistants. Work is assigned by a housing authority administrator and is reviewed to determine program effectiveness and consistency with housing authority standards and policies and overall program objectives.

Examples of Work Performed:

Plans, organizes, and directs the overall activities of the center or program.

Plans and supervises daily activities of the program.

Provides leadership, guidance, direction and supervision to children in indoor or outdoor activities.

Interprets to aides and volunteers the principles of child development.

Presents and interprets the program to housing authority employes, aides, and the public and evaluates existing community resources to determine their possible use.

Utilizes information and recommendations coordinated by caseworkers in developing and carrying out a unified approach to each child and family.

Insures that appropriate and usable equipment and supplies are available when needed.

Participates in staff meetings to discuss methods of program evaluation and improvement.

Performs related work as required.

ACTIVITIES SUPERVISOR (Housing)

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the physical, social, and emotional needs of children and/or tenants and of educational experiences which will further their socialization process.

Knowledge of individual and/or group behavior with special emphasis on children’s needs and behavior patterns.

Knowledge of educational and recreational program objectives and interpretation of rules, regulations, standards, policies, and housing authority procedures as they relate to the program or center’s services.

Knowledge of the basic principles of program interpretation and evaluation and community organization and available resources.

Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of in-service training.

Knowledge of the basic theories, practices, and current developments in the field of recreation and educational programs.

Knowledge of the principles of supervision.

Ability to provide leadership and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff members and the public.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of a staff of activity assistants or volunteers.

Ability to prepare comprehensive reports, to make clear and pertinent statements, orally and in writing, and to speak effectively in public.

Experience and Training:

Three years of experience in organizing and leading social or recreational services or activities in a community setting;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
