DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION SPECIALIST TRAINEE L0680

DEFINITION: This is work of a trainee nature in drug and alcohol prevention involving educational and community development activities.

An employee in this class functions in a trainee capacity in a program designed to acquaint the employee with a variety of activities that comprise a drug and alcohol prevention program. Employees are introduced to prevention work in the school systems and/or the community and are gradually expected to learn the details of the work. Work includes putting together the material for presentation including writing the presentation. Employees are expected to present the material to a school or community audience after appropriate preparation and rehearsal. As time goes on employees are expected to take on more responsible assignments involving the providing of technical advice to schools and/or the community. Employees are introduced to appropriate literature in the drug and alcohol field as another means of becoming acquainted with the program. As employees develop proficiency in a particular area, the supervision becomes more general. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for completeness and adherence to agency goals and objectives.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in formal and on the job training designed to develop and sharpen skills in drug and alcohol prevention.

Observes prevention specialists performing a variety of duties ad part of an overall training and development program.

Receives guidance and counseling to acquaint the individual with the drug and alcohol prevention program content, goals, and philosophies.

Participates in a variety of assignments designed to broaden experience in the drug and alcohol prevention program.

Performs a variety of individual or group training assignments to aid in the development of analytical and communicative skills.

Receives instruction in preparing and delivering didactic presentations for school and community audiences.

Presents information on drug and alcohol topics to school and community audiences after appropriate instruction.

Assists prevention specialists in on-the-job training assignments, and is assigned more difficult and complex work as the training period nears completion.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling and usage.

Ability to observe and comprehend the work of other employees as part of the training process.

Ability to learn the concepts and technical details of the drug and alcohol prevention program.

Ability to prepare clear, comprehensive, and accurate training presentations.

Ability to gather and analyze facts and develop sound conclusions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor’s degree;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
