Job Title:  DRUG AND ALCOHOL RESIDENTIAL WORKER

Definition: This is journey level work with drug and alcohol abuse clients in a county residential program in coaching and guiding clients to develop living skills necessary for the clients' return to community living.

An employee in this class coaches and assists clients in acquiring and testing new behavior patterns and skills necessary for returning to independent community living. Work involves participating in the development and implementation of individual treatment plans, coaching and guiding clients in solving simple problems, and performing public contact work as required. An employee may function as a lead worker in training and guiding new employees. Work is performed under the general direction of the Residential Director or the Residential Worker Supervisor who reviews work for effectiveness and adherence to program policies and procedures through conferences and reports.

Examples of Work: Assists in the implementation of individual treatment plans by coaching and guiding clients in resolving simple problems and acquiring and testing new behavior patterns and skills necessary for independent community living.

Conducts educational activities for residents and community groups.

Assists residents in acquiring self-care skills such as money management, shopping, cooking, and housekeeping.

Assists as a lead worker in training and guiding new employees.

Relates to and maintains relationships with facility residents and community groups and individuals.

Maintains administrative records and reports by documenting facility activities.

Attends staff meetings, AA meetings, and educational conferences.

Responds to emergency situations.

Transports clients by personal vehicle to counseling sessions, employment interviews, etc. which take place away from the residential living facility.

Performs routines of urine surveillance and medication monitoring.

Performs related duties as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to develop and maintain a sympathetic and understanding attitude when working with program clients.

Ability to learn and apply simple principles and methods of drug and alcohol rehabilitation to facility residents.

Ability to make judgments regarding the health and welfare of program clients and to respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to instruct and advise new employees on the methods and procedures used in the residential living facility.

Ability to provide appropriate transportation for residents to counseling sessions, employment interviews, etc. which take place away from the residential living facility.

Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.

Minimum Experience and Training: No previous experience and training required.
